Recession Relief - Red and White!
Occasionally I get cell phone calls from friends asking me for help
buying wine - sort of their on-call sommelier. Anyway, I got onesuch
call two nights ago from a server friend who was cut early from her
shift, and consequently wasn't exactly swimming in immediate funds, but
needed a white and a red to take to a party.
"I'm on a tight budget," she said.
"No problem," I said.
"Tighter than I usually mean," she said.
"How tight?"
"I have a 20-dollar-bill."
"I can get you good wine and change for that."
"Oh yeah?"
"Go to the front of the store. On the right side where we stack wine up
front, look for a bottle with a blue cap and an almost clear bottle. It
has a crest on the label."
"CasalGarcia for $8.29?"
"That's it. Portuguese Vinho Verde. Awesome porch sipper. Fresh like
limeade. Summers there are probably more hot and muggy than summers
here, and that's how they survive. That, and animal wits."
"How about a red?"
"Go down the aisle past the CasalGarcia. Look for the map of Spain."
"Okay, I'm standing underneath it."
"You went too far. I didn't say stand underneath it. Go back a couple
of boxes. Look for a red wine - it will have a label that looks like
Georgia O'Keefe crossed with manga."
"Tarima for $7.99?"
"That's it! Great Monastrell from Spain, Rich dark fruit. Great stuff for the money."
When I was that party later that night, people kept asking if we had
those two wines in stock. They were the big hit. If you want to be a
big hit at your next party, you could buy these two wines for a $20
bill and get $2.46 back (after sales tax). Not too shabby, Or you could
take advantage of case pricing!
Casal Garcia Vinho Verde - $8.29/bt
Tarima 2009 Jumilla Monastrell - $7.99/bt
Ridge Tasting at Room 39!
We had so much fun partnering up with Room 39 last month that we're
gearing up to do it again - this time with a Happy Hour
walkthrough-style tasting at the restaurant featuring a killer line-up
of Ridge wines and Room 39's Hors d'Oeuvres.
The event begins at 5:00 and ends at 7:00 PM on Thursday, July 22nd.
Ridge is one of California's greatest wineries, with a 40-year track
record of making singular and wonderful Chardonnay, Zinfandel blends
and Monte Bello Cabernet Sauvignon. Winemaker Paul Draper's faith in
great terroirs has inspired many of the next generation of California,
and these wines are still in the "not-to-be-missed" category.
To insure that you do not miss, call Room 39 for reservations - 816-753-3939 - come early, or come late, but be there.
Wines to be tasted:
Ridge 2008 Santa Cruz Mountains Estate Chardonnay
Ridge 2006 Santa Cruz Mountains Estate Cabernet/Merlot
Ridge 2008 'Three Valleys' Zinfandel Blend
Ridge 2007 East Bench Zinfandel Blend
Ridge 2007 Lytton Springs Zinfandel Blend
Ridge 2007 Pagani Ranch Zinfandel Blend
Ridge 2006 Monte Bello - as in THE Monte Bello, as in one of
California's greatest Cabernet-based wines, as in "Thank god for this
stuff, because I sure can't afford 2009 Bordeaux."
The wines will be available for sale through us (Gomer's) at great prices. Some wines are limited. Hope we see you there.
